Parmi les vassaux du roi, le noble Comte de Salisbury, bientot l'heureux epoux de la belle Alix de Granfton, dont le roi est secretement amo 1338. Edouard III, roi d'Angleterre, pousse par son cousin Robert d'Artois (celui des Rois maudits...), entre en rebellion contre Philippe VI de Valois, suzerain de ses possessions francaises. La Guerre de Cent ans vient de commencer.

Parmi les vassaux du roi, le noble Comte de Salisbury, bientot l'heureux epoux de la belle Alix de Granfton, dont le roi est secretement amoureux. Escarmouches, batailles navales, combats sanglants, la fortune sourit aux Anglais vainqueurs a Crecy et devant Calais. Le comte, prisonnier des Francais, rentre chez lui c'est pour apprendre avec horreur que le roi a abuse, apres l'avoir droguee, de la tendre Alix.

L'epopee guerriere devient alors une tragedie dont l'issue - que nous ne devoilerons pas ici - ne peut etre que fatale. La Comtesse de Salisbury, parue dans La Presse, de juillet a septembre 1836, est le PREMIER ROMAN-FEUILLETON de la litterature. On y trouve deja pleinement le souffle des grands romans historiques a venir.
